The winning Katyn Museum, a finalist for the 2017 Mies van der Rohe Award, is inscribed in the fortifications of the Warsaw Citadel. This symbolic project is a commemorative story of the Katyn events, which leaves space for visitors to experience history individually.
The potential of this project was a very difficult subject. We thought for a long time about what a memorial to the victims of the Katyn massacre should look like. The decision was made that the museum should speak not only about death, but also about the lives of the victims, their families, and be an expression of their memory. The idea of the museum is a road that leads through the historic area of the citadel. On this road, the historic context, contemporary architecture, art and the museum's display build a coherent narrative and contemplative space. In the hustle and bustle of the surrounding world, we wanted to create a space of silence that is all the more meaningful," the architects explain.
The Katyn Museum was created in cooperation between the architects and a team of historians, artist Jerzy Kalina and the Maks team led by Krzysztof Lang.
